The special meeting of the board was headed by interim chairman and election commissioner Justice (retired) Afzal Haider. Mani assumes his executive powers as PCB chairman with immediate effect, and had a brief meeting with the BoG members after the election.
Ehsan Mani was nominated for the post by Pakistan prime minister and patron of the PCB, Imran Khan after Najam Sethi resigned from his position following Khan's election as prime minister of the country.
Mani has been mainly associated with the International Cricket Council. He represented the PCB at the ICC from 1989 to 1996, and also served a director of the ICC finance and marketing committee from 1996 to 2002. One of his major achievements was negotiating a lucrative sale of the media rights for the ICC. He later served as ICC president from 2003 to 2006.
Another important aspect that Mani will need to deal immediately is the Pakistan Super League (PSL), which awaits a fresh commercial and TV rights deal. The PCB under Sethi had also been trying to slowly bring the competition to Pakistan. Last year, three games were played in Pakistan and Sethi had vowed to bring half of PSL matches to Pakistan in its fourth edition. Mani had earlier praised the work done by Sethi in launching the PSL and bringing cricket to Pakistan.
The current Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf government has also called for accountability and transparency in the PCB affairs and called for audits of the first two seasons of the PSL.
For Mani, the immediate task is to review the legal battle started by previous chairman Najam Sethi over two unplayed bilateral series against India. The PCB and the BCCI are set to face off before the ICC's dispute panel on October 1. The PCB claims up to USD 70million in lost revenue from the failure of the BCCI to play two series - in November 2014 and December 2015 - which were agreed to by the boards in 2014.
