Pakistan vs Australia 2018

The stunning numbers behind Mohammad Abbas' success

15.64 – The bowling average of Mohammad Abbas, the fourth lowest in Test history and the lowest for any bowler with at least 50 wickets in the last 122 years. All the three bowlers who have a better average than Abbas played cricket before the 20th century – Billy Barnes (15.54), JJ Ferris (12.70) and George Lohmann (10.75).

19 – The number of innings Abbas has bowled in Tests with a wicket. No fast bowler from Pakistan had such a consistent start to his Test career and only one, the left-arm spinner Abdur Rehman, has bowled in 19 consecutive innings with a wicket at the beginning of the job. The previous fast bowler with a wicket in most successive innings was Wasim Akram (11). The world record is by New Zealand’s Shane Bond who took a wicket in each of 32 innings of his short Test career.

12 – The number of years after which a Pakistan fast bowler has taken 10 wickets in a Test match. Abbas accounted for five wickets each innings against Australia in Abu Dhabi and finished the match with the figures of 10 for 95 becoming the first Pakistan pacer to grab a ten-for since Mohammad Asif’s 11 wickets match-haul against Sri Lanka in an away Test in Kandy in 2006.

In the last two decades, the only other Pakistan fast bowler to take 10 wickets in a home Test is Shoaib Akhtar (10-80) against Bangladesh in Peshawar in 2003.

17 – The number of wickets taken by Abbas in the two-Test series against Australia, the most by a fast bowler in a series in UAE and three more than the previous best – 14 each by Umar Gul and Junaid Khan against Sri Lanka in 2011 and 2014 respectively. Both Gul and Junaid did it in a three-Test series, Abbas needed only two matches to go past them.

Abbas’ 17 is also the most wickets by a pacer against Australia in a two-Test series. England’s Richard Ellison also claimed 17 scalps against Australia in two Tests in the Ashes series in 1985 but the series overall had six Tests.

2 – The number of player-of-the-series awards Abbas has bagged in his short career. Just three Pakistan fast bowlers have received it on more than two occasions – Waqar Younis (5), Wasim Akram (7) and Imran Khan (8).

59 – The number of wickets Abbas has after ten Tests. The only Pakistan bowler with more wickets at this stage of the career was Yasir Shah, who had 61 after first ten games. The previous record by a Pakistan fast bowler was by Waqar Younis who claimed 53 wickets in his first ten Tests.

100 – Pakistan’s success rate with the Decision Review System (DRS) when Abbas was bowling in the series against Australia. He reviewed four out of four decisions correctly whereas the other bowlers reviewed only one out of 11 decisions correctly dropping the success rate to 9 percent only. Abbas has reviewed each of his last five DRS calls successfully in Tests stretching back to Pakistan’s win against England at Lord’s.
