PCB hits back at Umar Akmal’s ‘reckless statements’

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) ‘strongly condemned’ batsman Umar Akmal ’s claims that the national side’s head coach Mickey Arthur had insulted and abused him in the presence of Inzamam-ul-Haq.

The 27-year-old leveled the allegations in a press conference on Wednesday and was issued a show-cause notice, asking him to file his reply within seven days, by the cricket body the next day.

“Akmal was given as many as seven chances to improve his fitness and match the standards of his teammates,” the PCB said in a statement on Friday.

“Arthur had placed Akmal in his white ball format plans and gave him repeated chances for redemption, unfortunately though the batsman remained incapable of reaching the requisite fitness level.”

The recent controversy began after Akmal was booted out of the Pakistan’s Champions Trophy squad a week before the tournament.

Akmal had failed two fitness tests in two days. Overall he has failed seven fitness tests, as Arthur revealed in a press conference earlier this month .

“The PCB wants to stress that the team trainer conducts fitness tests of squad members before each international assignment and the tests before the Champions Trophy were conducted as a continuation of the policy,” the statement further said.

“Once again Umar failed to attain the desired level of fitness and the team management was left with no option but to drop him from the squad.

The statement from the cricket board comes after Akmal took to Twitter to tell his side of the story in the wee hours of Friday.

In his tweets, Akmal claimed that the head coach kept him out of the team under a planned scheme. He also said that his presence in the squad was threatening for Azhar Ali or Mohammad Hafeez, hence he was dropped from the squad altogether.

“The PCB awaits his response to the show-cause issued to him yesterday and hopes that in the meantime, the batsman will refrain from making baseless allegations,” the statement concluded.
