When Kamran Akmal secured the Karachi Test

As subcontinent giants turn 70, writers at Cricingif relive some of the classic contests between India and Pakistan.

It is always difficult to truly judge a match using only the scorecard, but this match really takes the cake. On the face of it, it’s a crushing victory in a series which had consistently seen mammoth scores. But hidden within it’s bland result is a match that had some incredible peaks before it petered out tamely.

It began preposterously with a hattrick in the very first over, and much like Kolkata ‘99, Pakistan were left foundering at 39/6. Coming in at 8, Kamran Akmal scored one of the greatest 100s in Pakistan’s history to drag the team to 245. Pakistan’s two irresistible pacers, Shoaib Akhtar and Mohammad Asif, then destroyed the Indian top order in spectacular fashion in both innings. In the first one, India recovered to end within seven of Pakistan’s score. In the second, they ended up with twenty more runs but this time Pakistan had asked them to chase 606.

It meant that the end was far from classic, but it’s hard to think of another Test in the sub-continent that showcased such memorable swing bowling from both sides.
