PAK won by 49 runs

Pakistan edged South Africa to World Cup elimination and kept alive their own slim chances of making it to the semi-finals with a 49-run win at Lord's on Sunday.

Chasing 309 to stay in contention for the semi-finals, South Africa were restricted to 259-9.

Shadab Khan and Wahab Riaz took three wickets each as South Africa surrendered without showing a lot of fight.

Faf du Plessis's side had already been roughed up by Haris Sohail's 89 off 59 balls.

South Africa have been plagued by problems when their World Cup campaign started. It all began when AB de Villiers had offered to come out of his retirement which was turned down followed by an injury which ruled out Steyn out of the World Cup.

They were hammered right at the start of the World Cup, with a 104-run defeat against England. The Proteas never recovered from that and could only manage a win against Afghanistan.

Pakistan were also playing to keep their World Cup chances alive in front of an army of fans at Lord’s stadium.

Hashim Amla was nipped out by Mohammad Amir as the Proteas managed only 38 from the first 10 overs.

As the run-rate mounted, Quinton de Kock fell for 47, caught on the boundary by the diving Imam-ul-Haq for Shadab's 50th one-day international wicket.

Du Plessis perished for 63 when a slower ball from Mohammad Amir ballooned high in the air for wicketkeeper Sarfaraz to take a simple catch.

Rassie van der Dussen (36) went in similar fashion, skying Shadab to give Mohammed Hafeez a catch that pushed South Africa towards the exit.

Earlier, Haris Sohail's dashing display had set the tone for a rough day for South Africa.

The 30-year-old, who was dropped following Pakistan's shocking defeat against the West Indies, made up for lost time as he smashed South Africa’s bowlers to all parts.

"We made some changes today for the good of the team," said Sarfaraz.

"Haris Sohail came in, he was hungry to play in the match and the way he batted was a turning point. You see Jos Buttler play that type of innings so the way he played was fantastic."

"It was a complete bowling effort, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Amir, Shaheen Afridi all did their bit," he added. "That what has been missing in previous matches."
