Chennai Super Kings halted a high-flying Kolkata Knight Riders with a seven seven-wicket drubbing of the visitors despite Andre Russell's heroics.
After restricting Kolkata to a meagre total of 108-9 and despite losing two early wickets, Chennai never looked in trouble throughout the game as Faf du Plessis (43* off 45) and Ambati Rayudu (21 off 31) stroked their way home.
Shane Watson (17 off 9) was off to a blistering start before Sunil Narine (2-24) accounted for him in the third over. Suresh Raina (14 off 13) became the second victim of Narine with the score at 35. Du Plessis and Rayudu then added 41 for the third wicket to take the game close before the latter was dismissed by Piyush Chawla (1-28). Kedar Jadhav (8* off 8) then accompanied Du Plessis till the end as the Super Kings chased down the target with 16 balls to spare.
Earlier, Deepak Chahar (3-20) ripped apart the Kolkata top order, reducing visitors to 9-3 in 2.3 overs. Robin Uthappa (11 off 9) and Dinesh Karthik (19 off 21) both got starts but failed to kick on. By the halfway mark, Kolkata had lost six wickets for just 47 runs. Had it not for Russell's fifty (50* off 44), things would have been even bleaker for the visitors.
Imran Tahir and Harbhajan Singh shared two wickets each for Chennai.
Chahar was adjudged the player of the match for his stunning opening spell.
