Match tied (Colombo Kings won the one-over eliminator)

The inaugural edition of Lanka Premier League (LPL) could not have asked for a more electrifying start as the contest between Colombo Kings and Kandy Tuskers was decided in the Super Over.

On a flat Hambantota surface, batsmen from both teams set up an extravagant run-scoring fiesta eventually leading to scores being tied after 40 overs.

The experience of Isuru Udana then came in handy in the six-ball shootout as Colombo Kings managed to defend 16 runs against the power-hitting duo of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Kusal Perera.

Carrying his scintillating form into the Super Over, Gurbaz hammered a boundary and six before he missed a delivery on his pads that was contentiously not called a wide. Gurbaz had shuffled across the crease to the off-stump but the ball evaded the leg-stump and the umpire refused to give into the batsman's whims.

The next ball saw Gurbaz take a single with Perera failing to conjure the glory shot off Udana's final delivery.

Earlier in the chase, Udana was the star for his team with a flurry of lusty blows that inched Colombo Kings towards the finishing line.

Facing Asela Gunaratne in the last over, Udana hammered a couple of sixes and then ran successive doubles to level the scores.

Coming in to bat five down, Udana was the second-highest scorer for his side with an unbeaten 34 from 12 balls whereas Dinesh Chandimal bossed proceedings in the first half with an outstanding contribution of 80 runs.

Chandimal's exquisite class was on full display as he frequently deposited the ball over the boundary rope and dished out an array of wonderful strokes throughout his breezy 46-ball stay at the crease.

Chandimal's dismissal was followed by a mini-collapse as Naveen-ul-Haq grabbed two wickets in consecutive balls.

Andre Russell revived his team's chase with three fours and a six but he ultimately perished to the canny Nuwan Pradeep.

Kandy Tuskers' innings was filled with a spate of towering maximums and endless carnage from Gurbaz and Perera.

Gurbaz was the accelerator in the Powerplay when he smashed four sixes in his 22-ball 53 to get his team off to a rollicking start.

Colombo were able to pull back the scoring rate with Qais Ahmad and Udana going for less than 10 runs an over.

Perera, nevertheless, shone with his blistering strokes allowing him to post a highly impressive 87 at a strike rate in excess of 165.

While Kandy would have been satisfied with a total of 219/3 at the halfway stage, their happiness proved to be short-lived.
