Batsmen with Highest Dot Ball % in the PSL

Conventional wisdom says that dot balls not only amount to pressure but also are a huge liability for the batting side. A high dot-ball percentage in this format requires the team to counter it with a boundary-percentage that may result in teams losing wickets. Teams usually do not want to burden themselves with batsmen guilty of a high dot ball percentage.

To compile a list of batsmen with the highest dot ball % in the Pakistan Super League, only batsmen who have batted for a minimum of 120 balls were considered to make it a fair call. Dot ball % has been calculated by dividing the number of dot balls a batsman has faced by the total number of balls he has faced in the PSL and multiplying the result by 100.

5. Dwayne Smith

385 balls faced, 177 dot balls, 45.97 dot ball %, 110.91 strike rate

Teams are heavily reliant on their openers to provide them with a quick start but Islamabad United’s Dwayne Smith has often been found guilty of consuming too many dot balls. Off the 385 balls he has faced in the PSL, 177 have been dot balls which is nearly 46% of the total balls he has faced in the tournament and that puts him at no. 5 in the list.

4. Eoin Morgan

131 balls faced, 65 dot balls, 49.62 % dot balls, 103.82 strike rate

The English batsmen have statistically struggled in conditions controlled by spinners. Eoin Morgan was drafted in the Peshawar Zalmi squad for his successes in the IPL but his ability to rotate the strike has been questionable. With a dot ball percentage of 49.62%, he makes it to number four in the list of batsmen with a high dot ball % in the PSL.

3. Chris Gayle

207 balls faced, 103 dot balls, 49.76 % dot balls, 127.05 strike rate

The Universe Boss has a simple way of playing the shortest format: dot, dot and then bang, bang. This mantra, however, amounts to a higher dot ball percentage. Off the 207 balls he has faced in the PSL, 103 have been dot balls which his nearly 50%. Although his strike rate suggests that he covers it all for this in the end with fours and sixes but half of them converted to singles could be a different story.

2. Mohammad Hafeez

333 balls faced, 169 dot balls, 50.75 % dot balls, 112.01 strike rate

With a dot ball percentage of over 50, Mohammad Hafeez is the only Pakistani that features in this list. The all-rounder has found it hard to score a run of 169 of the 333 balls he has faced. Not only the dot balls, he is not balancing them up with a high boundary percentage which shows from his strike of 112. He stands at no. 2 in the list.

1. Lendl Simmons

135 balls, 70 dot balls, 51.85 % dot balls, 111.85 strike rate

Lendl Simmons represented the Karachi Kings franchise in the inaugural edition of the PSL and trusted with opening duties, he turned out to be a liability on the team. With the highest dot ball % in the tournament of nearly 52, he was dropped by his franchise in 2017 but he has been drafted back by the Kings for the 2018 edition in a replacement draft to cover for Colin Munro.
