Pakistan tour of West Indies

National return on cards for Akmal, Shehzad

Kamran Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad have been included in the preliminary squad for the limited-overs series of Pakistan’s upcoming tour of the West Indies.

Akmal, who last donned Pakistan’s colours almost three years ago, made a strong case for his return to the national side during the recently concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL). He smashed 353 runs at an average of 32 and was the sole centurion of the season. The 35-year-old, who opened for Peshawar Zalmi, was the highest run getter of the season and pocketed Best Player of the Tournament award.

Shehzad picked up form during the dying stages of the league. He struck two back to back for Quetta Gladiators before the Playoffs. During his side’s Playoff contest against Zalmi, the right-handed opener stuck his best score of 71. Shehzad has not played for Pakistan since January last year.

Preliminary Squad: Ahmad Shahzad, Muhammad Hafeez, Fakhar Zaman, Azhar Ali, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Asif Zakir, Saad Ali, Sarfraz Ahmed, Kamran Akmal, Fahim Ashraf, Hussain Tallat, Ammad Butt, Muhammad Amir, Hasan Ali, Wahab Riaz, Rahat Ali, Rumman Raees, Sohail Khan, Junaid Khan, Sohail Tanveer, Muhammad Abbas, Usman Shinwari, Usama Mir, Imad Wasim, Muhammad Asghar, Shadab Khan, Muhammad Nawaz, Yasir Shah.

Young leg-spinners Shadab Khan and Usama Mir have also made the cut in the 31-member line-up after their awe-inspiring performances during the second edition of the PSL.

Pakistan are scheduled to play four Twenty20 Internationals, three One-Day Internationals, and three Tests during their tour of the Caribbean islands, which starts from March 26.
