Five icon players at the Afghanistan Premier League

Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Andre Russell and Brendon McCullum are the high-profile internationals set to feature in the inaugural Afghanistan Premier League from October 5 to 21 in the UAE. These players were picked as “icon players”, along with Rashid Khan by the five franchises.

Here is a little glimpse as to what these players can offer:

Shahid Afridi (Paktia)

Shahid Afridi has been named as an icon player for the team Paktia. Afridi’s ability to chip in with both the ball and bat will give his side a boost. Backed up with likes of Mohammad Shahzad, Thisara Perera and Cameron Delport, fans can expect a few fireworks from Team Paktia. On his day, Afridi can take the game away from the opposition single-handedly which makes one of the most valuable players in this format.

Rashid Khan (Kabul)

One of the top leg-spinners at present, Rashid Khan poses a threat to majority of the batsmen in world cricket right now. Possessing an unorthodox grip backed up a very quick arm action, Rashid can be a tough proposition to go after. Most of the batsmen like to play him out and attack other bowlers. It will be interesting to see how he fares in this league.

Andre Russell (Nangarhar)

One of the most destructive T20 all-rounders right now, Andre Russell’s brute force can leave the bowlers unanswered when on song. His ability to stay low and get underneath the ball when the opposition bowlers miss out on their lengths is something to behold. Russell’s ability to contribute with the ball leaves him as one of the valuable players in this format.

Chris Gayle (Balkh)

Gayle’s ability to stand and deliver has entertained the cricket fans for so many years. One of the most prolific batsmen in the shorter format, Gayle is someone who is always on the watch list of the opposition bowlers. Gayle now likes to spend some time in the middle and then explodes when set which makes it even harder to bowl at him at times.

Brendon McCullum (Kandahar)

Again one of the most entertaining batsmen of the present era, McCullum at his best can go after any bowling attack on his day. His aggressive nature with the bat can unsettle the bowlers’ rhythm. He is also known as a smart tactician which will definitely help Kandahar in the inaugural APL 2018.
