Shamsi in focus as South Africa rest Tahir for remaining Zimbabwe T20s

South Africa have decided to take a closer look at left-arm wristspinner Tabraiz Shamsi as they rested Imran Tahir for remainder of Zimbabwe T20I series.

Tahir took 10 wickets, including a hat-trick, in 3 ODIs and claimed five wickets to finish with a career-best 5 for 23 in the opening T20I against Zimbabwe.

While Tahir remains their ace spinner, South Africa have remained adamant at managing Tahir’s workload to have him in best shape at the next year’s World Cup in England. He was also rested for South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year to give chance to other spinning options.

Shamsi has yet to take a wicket in two limited-overs matches against Zimbabwe, and has struggled in Tahir's shadow. With Tahir gone, Shamsi has a chance to show the coaches and selectors where he might fit into their plans.

With Tahir being their primary spin option, Shamsi has remained at fringes but has continued to impress in T20 leagues around the world. His last T20 assignment was with the St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League where he took three wickets in as many games.

South Africa face Zimbabwe on Friday for the second T20I of the series at Potchefstroom.
