Mumbai Indians were crowned the IPL 2017 champions, in a nail-biting, unbelievable one-run win.
Mumbai hold their nerve to clinch low scoring thriller by one run
After restricting Mumbai to a mediocre total of 129, RPS moved along nicely till the halfway mark. But following the wickets of Rahane and Dhoni, Mumbai tightened the screws and continued to scuffle the breathing space for the RPS. With 23 required of 12 balls, skipper Smith held the key for Pune. Last over would have been even difficult had he not hit Bumrah for a maximum of the second last ball of the innings. With 11 runs required of the last over, Manoj Tiwary swept Mitchel Johnson for four to simplify the equation. But two consecutive wickets of Tiwary and Smith in next two balls flipped the equation once again, leaving Christian and young Washington Sundar with 7 runs to get in 3 balls. They ran a bye, followed by a double, leaving 4 off the last ball. Johnson resorted to a fuller delivery on the legs which Christian was able to smash to the midwicket but could only manage two as Sundar was run out in search of an impossible third run.
Earlier, batting first, Mumbai’s batting never turned up as even 120 looked impossible at one stage. Mumbai will be thankful to Krunal Pandya for playing an important cameo towards the end of the innings to add some semblance to the total. Unadkat, Zampa and Dan Christian shared two wickets each.
Mumbai have been crowned champions for record third time, with Rohit becoming the first captain to win three IPL titles.
