The 3rd match of the Champions Trophy was played between Sri Lanka and South Africa at The Oval on Saturday.
South Africa were asked to bat in the slightly overcast conditions by Sri Lanka. Thanks to a batting masterclass by Hashim Amla and late flurry of runs by JP Duminy, South Africa managed to post a competitive target of 300.
In reply Sri Lanka could only manage 203 runs; gave away four wickets to Imran Tahir.
Hashim Amla after a cautious start to the innings breezed through his 25th ODI century: the most by a South African batsman and also became the fastest to reach this milestone going past Kohli. Amla scrapped Kohli’s record my 11 innings as he reached the milestone in his 151st innings.
Amla’s 103 came off 115 balls at a very calculated pace: he scored 13 off his first 27 balls, 71 off his next 59 and 17 off his last 29 balls. He hit 5 fours and 2 sixes.
Sri Lanka’s chances of chasing down the target of 300 were limited by Imran Tahir in the 18th over of the match: first the in-form Dinesh Chandimal was run-out by the brilliant AB de Villiers and then Imran Tahir got rid of Chamara Kapugedera on a first ball duck with a wrong’un. In the 26th over he took the wicket of the set batsman Upul Tharanga who scored a gutsy 57 off 69 balls. This pretty much sealed the match in South Africa’s favour. His third and fourth wicket: DAS Gunaratne and Nuwan Pradeep.
Imran Tahir’s spell spinned the match in his team’s favour.
