Kusal Mendis' innings kept Sri Lanka’s semi-final hopes alive. The equation is simple for the Islanders. All they require is to be beat Pakistan in the final group-stage contest on Monday at Cardiff to go into the next round.
Coming in to bat in the fifth over after Niroshan Dickwella fell to Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mendis struck 12 boundaries – 11 fours and a six – before running himself out in the 28th over. But by then, he had laid the foundation for the batsmen below him to go after a record chase. This went down as the highest run chase at the Oval, besting India’s 317 against England in 2007. This is also their joint biggest chase: they had chased the same total against England in 2006.
Shikhar Dhawan provided India with a solid start, scoring a belligerent 125 from 128 balls. His penchant for scoring against the Lankans came in handy for the India, as he partnered with Rohit Sharma for their third consecutive 100-plus stand. His 198-minute-long innings saw him become third quickest to 10 ODI centuries behind South Africa’s Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla.
