Pakistan batsman Haris Sohail has been ruled out of the ongoing Test series against South Africa with a persistent knee injury, which also kept him out of the Boxing Day Test at Centurion.

Sohail suffered the injury prior to the practice match, but remained with the squad to take part in rehabilitation sessions. He did not bat in the nets before the first Test and was declared unfit to play an hour or so before the scheduled start.

The 29-year old had been in fine form and scored two centuries against Australia and New Zealand. He finished 2018 with 550 runs in the longest format of the game at an average of 39.28.

The middle-order batsman has had his troubles with injuries. In 2013, an ankle injury prevented him from making his debut in international cricket. The Pakistan Cricket Board may announce a replacement if necessary.

"Left-handed middle-order batsman Haris Sohail has been ruled out of the on-going tour of South Africa due to a right knee injury. Haris was not available for selection for the Boxing Day Test in Centurion while he is also out of contention for the remainder of the tour due to the same injury.

"PCB will setup Haris' appointment (if needed) with the best orthopedic surgeon recommended by the National Cricket Academy's panel of doctors for further assessment, analysis and treatment," said PCB in a statement.

Pakistan and South Africa are scheduled to play the 2nd Test at Cape Town on January 3.
