Match 20 of the ICC Women’s World Cup was played between Sri Lanka and West Indies at the County Ground, Derby, on Sunday. 2013 World Cup finalists finally managed to break the jinx and registered their first win of the tournament. They defeated Sri Lanka by 47 runs.
Both teams are having a forgettable world cup, having not been able to register a single win, this match was more about restoring pride. It is almost next to impossible for Sri Lanka, West Indies and Pakistan to qualify to the next round. In today’s match: Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl first. West Indies have batted in all their matches so far. It proved to be decent outing for the batters this time around, they managed to post a target of 230, this was also West Indies highest total of the world cup. Windies kept on losing wickets at regular intervals; Merissa Aguilleria top scored with 46*, Deandra Dottin scored a quick-fire 38 (smashed 7 fours), a bit of sloppy fielding and later Shanel Daley’s almost run a ball 21 contributed to their total.Medium pacer Sripali Weerakkody was the pick of the bowlers for Sri Lanka, she took another 3-fer. In their run-chase, Sri Lanka only managed to score 182. Chamari Atapattu, the star against Australia, failed to capitalize on the steady start she got, managed only 26 (50). The other batters, Siriwardene 33, Weerakkody 30 couldn’t get going either. West Indies bowlers, particularly their spinners kept the batters under pressure at all times, Anisa Mohammed took 3, Fletcher and Daley took 2 each.
West Indies first win of tournament might have come a little late but this will help them put up a better fight in their remaining matches. Sri Lanka having lost all 5 matches don’t stand any chance to make it to the next round now. They’d still want to end the tournament on a positive note by winning at least one of their last 2 matches.

Melissa Aguilleria might not have scored at a quick pace but her 59 ball 46* proved more than useful for her team. She was also the highest scorer of the match from both sides. She kept her end safe while the batters at the other end managed to play their shots and score at a better strike rate. Aguilleria only hit 2 fours but managed to take singles at ease throughout her innings.
Anisa Mohammed was the main architect of her team’s first win of the tournament. In the 26th over of the match: she struck twice in two balls to first get rid of the in-form Chamari Atatpattu for 26 and then she took the wicket of Dilani Manodara for a duck. This over changed the complexion of the match and gave West Indies the much needed momentum. Her third wicket was of Shashikala Siriwardene who scored 33(67). Mohammed was rightly chosen as the player of the match.
