Match 21 of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2017 was played between Pakistan and West Indies at Grace Road, Leicester, on Tuesday. This was a dead rubber (Pakistan and West Indies can not not qualify to the knockout stage), both teams were playing to restore pride and give their fans something to cheer about. Rain played spoilsport from the start and in the end it was West Indies who won by 19 runs (DLS method).
West Indies won their last game against Sri Lanka by 47 runs and finally looked like a spirited unit. Pakistan were thrashed by New Zealand and their winless streak in the World Cup was stretched to 12 matches. Pakistan did manage to beat Windies in the warm-up match; they would have loved to repeat that performance in today’s match but Windies brilliant batting didn’t help their cause at all. Sana Mir won the toss and rightly chose to field first in overcast conditions. Despite Asmavia two early wickets, Pakistan failed to capitalize, their fielding let them down once again and Windies captain Stefaine Taylor steadied the ship as she went onto to score a breezy 90. But the star of the show was Deandra Dottin who completely took the game away from Pakistan; she struck her first and also the fastest hundred for Windies in ODIs. Windies innings finished at 285/4; rain in the innings break lead to a revised of 245 in 38 overs. Unlike their previous 4 innings where Pakistan failed to score more than 150 runs, the batters put up a solid response. Javeria Khan batted beautifully for her uneaten 58; along with opener Nahida Khan she added 80 runs for the third wicket and kept Pakistan’s hopes alive by keeping close to the DLS par score. Things took an ugly turn for Pakistan when Anisa Mohammed struck twice in 13 balls and stole the momentum away right before the stop of play. Pakistan fell short by 19 runs DLS method.
