De Villiers agrees to visit Pakistan for PSL matches

Former South Africa captain AB de Villiers has agreed to play two matches in Lahore for Lahore Qalandars in the upcoming Pakistan Super League on March 9 and 10.

Lahore Qalandars will face defending champions Islamabad United on March 9, while on the following day, they will face Multan Sultans.

De Villiers, who announced a shock retirement from International cricket in March last year, was snapped up by Lahore Qalandars in the draft in November. He signed on to play only seven of the side's eight league matches in the UAE leg of the tournament but in a video statement released on Monday, the 34-year-old stated that he would be available for Qalandars’ final two league matches which will be played at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore.

“I am delighted to confirm that I will represent Lahore Qalandars in front of our home crowds on 9 and 10 March, during the HBL PSL 2019,” de Villiers announced.

“I look forward to revisiting the Gaddafi Stadium and aim to play my part in helping Lahore Qalandars achieve something they have been aspiring for since the inception of this tournament in 2016,” he added.

De Villiers is one of the top South African players to play in Pakistan. In 2017, Faf du Plessis, Hashim Amla, Morne Morkel, Imran Tahir and David Miller were a part of touring World XI side which played three T20Is in Lahore.

PCB chairman appreciates De Villiers’ decision

PCB Chairman Ehsan Mani welcomed the South African legend's decision to visit Pakistan, terming it a once in a lifetime opportunity to see him play for the local fans.

“We appreciate the decision of AB de Villiers and look forward to welcoming him to the home of Pakistan cricket," said Mani.

"I am sure De Villiers’ appearance will attract new fans, and more eyeballs will follow the PSL than ever before.

“For the Lahore crowds, it will be a great opportunity to watch this generation’s cricket genius live in action. I am sure they will turn up in great numbers to support De Villiers as well as Lahore Qalandars and their opponents.”

The fourth edition of the PSL will begin on February 14 with eight matches set to be played in Pakistan.
