Thunder stay out of BBL finals race despite four-wicket win over Hurricanes

Ball-by-ball details & scorecard: Sydney Thunder v Hobart Hurricanes - Match 55 - Canberra

Australia cricket stars Pat Cummins and Usman Khawaja returned from Test duties against Sri Lanka to help power the Sydney Thunder over the Hobart Hurricanes by four wickets but it wasn't just enough to boost their side into the BBL Finals top four.

Cummins dismissed in-form openers D'Arcy Short and skipper Matthew Wade, out caught for a breezy 45 off just 29 balls - including three fours and two sixes.

However, Bailey and McDermott struck a 94-run partnership to as the Hurricanes posted 4-165 from 19 overs after rain interrupted play.

The Thunder needed to win the rain-affected contest in just 11.3 overs to claw themselves back into the top four.

Khawaja struck a quick-fire 36 off 21 - including six fours and one maximum, and a wayward opening from Riley Meredith over which costed 16 runs gave Sydney hope of completing a miracle against the table-toppers.

Cummins scored the winnings runs with four balls to spare, but the hosts were only 5-95 after 11.3 overs with the Hurricanes already wrapping up their Home Semi-Final.

A 68-run stand between Callum Ferguson (47 off 34) and Chris Green (34* from 28 balls) ultimately didn’t count much as the Thunder cruised to victory with 6-166 in 18.2 overs to finish on sixth position in the table.
