Virat Kohli's India thrashed Sri Lanka by 304 runs inside four days on Saturday to claim the first Test in their three-match series.

Day 4

After hitting an unbeaten 103, Kohli declared on 240-3, setting Sri Lanka a near-impossible target of 550 to win in Galle. The home side made 245 with Dimuth Karunaratne making 97.

India scored a whopping 600 in their first innings before bowling out Sri Lanka for 291.

Day 3

India reached 189-3 and a second-innings lead of nearly 500 runs after another powerful display on the third day of the first Test against Sri Lanka on Friday.

India captain Virat Kohli remained at the crease on 76. Abhinav Mukund was out lbw for 86 on what turned out to be the last ball of the day in Galle.

India scored 600 in their first innings and then finished bowling Sri Lanka out for 291 earlier Friday. They go into the fourth day with a commanding lead of 498.

Day 2

Sri Lanka were reeling at 154-5 at the end of day two after India posted 600 in their first innings in the opening Test at Galle on Thursday.

Angelo Mathews (54) and Dilruwan Perera (six) were not out at stumps, as the hosts still trailed by 446 runs with five wickets in hand.

India posted a commanding 600 in their first essay, thanks to centuries from Shikhar Dhawan (190) and Cheteshwar Pujara (153).

Paceman Nuwan Pradeep was the most successful Sri Lankan bowler, taking six wickets for 132 runs.

Day 1

Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteshwar Pujara hit big centuries as India reached 399-3 at the end of the first day of the opening Test against Sri Lanka on Wednesday.

Dhawan smashed 190 and Pujara was undefeated on 144 at the close.

The pair put on 253 for the second wicket to set India on course for a big first innings total after skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat in Galle.

Ajinkya Rahane (39) was Pujara's partner when stumps were drawn.

Paceman Nuwan Pradeep was the most successful bowler for the hosts, taking all three wickets to fall for 64 runs.
