Multan eye resurgence against a stable-looking Peshawar

The 14th fixture of this year’s Pakistan Super League will be played between Multan Sultans and the Peshawar Zalmi. Sultans have only emerged out triumphant in one of the four matches that they have featured in. The victory came against a jittery Islamabad United early on in the tournament. They lost to the Karachi Kings in their tournament opener and lost their third game comprehensively before losing out to Lahore in an enthralling game of cricket in Sharjah.

Sultans need to up the ante with a modified approach. Although their skipper has been in sublime touch and amassed 146 runs in the four games that he has featured in, the rest of the team needs to step up and offer a handful of good performances to pull things back for a team that is slowly stooping down into an abyss of defeats and disappointments. James Vince’s presence has really boosted the team’s morale. His blazing 84 against the Qalandars was one of the finest knocks of the tournament and the Sultans will hope that he can carry on his merry way.

The Zalmi, on the other hand, have won two and lost two and have a slight edge over their counterparts. They trampled Lahore Qalandars before stifling Karachi’s progress but lost their fourth game of the tournament to Islamabad United by a marginal 12 runs. Darren Sammy’s spirited captaincy and the belligerence of Zalmi's pace battery is what makes them stand out from all other franchises in the tournament.

Peshawar Zalmi have received significant dividends with the addition of Umar Amin to their playing XI. However, it’s their pace battery that has pretty much stolen the show with its aggression and wicket-taking expertise. Hasan Ali has been the biggest star and has taken four wickets in an innings twice in the tournament. Zalmi are not expected to tinker a whole lot with a winning combination that is triumphing, thus far.

Multan Sultans’s Probable XI: Umar Siddique, James Vince, Laurie Evans, Shoaib Malik (c), Hammad Azam, Andre Russell/Daniel Christian, Shahid Afridi, Shakeel Ansar, Ali Shafiq, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan

Peshawar Zalmi's Probable XI: Kamran Akmal, Imam-ul-Haq, Umar Amin, Dawid Malan, Kieron Pollard, Darren Sammy (c), Liam Dawson, Hasan Ali, Wahab Riaz, Umaid Asif, Ibtisam Sheikh
