Misbah, Sammy seal playoffs spot for Peshawar

Misbah-ul-Haq and Darren Sammy starred for their side as they pulled off a tricky run chase to power their side to the play-offs of the Pakistan Super League 2019.

Misbah struck a fighting 55-ball 59 not out while Sammy notched a 36-ball 46 as the pair lifted Peshawar from a precarious 20-5 to help chase down a modest 125-run target in 19.5 overs.

Lahore’s batting never looked in control as Haris Sohail (33-ball 43), David Wiese (26 off 16 balls) and Umair Masood (28-ball 22) helped Lahore to a lackluster 124-7 after they were sent into bat.

Shaheen’s opening spell had wrecked Peshawar's top order with wickets of Imam-ul-Haq (four), Umar Amin and Liam Dawson to leave them reeling at 12-4.

Rahat Ali had dismissed Kamran Akmal through the gate for three to open the gates. David Wiese then dismissed Kieron Pollard to reduce 20-5, bowled for two.

But Misbah, playing his only second match of the tournament, steadied the innings before delivering few punches in the final four overs when Peshawar needed 34 runs for victory.

It came down to 31 in three after Shaheen conceded just three but Sammy unleashed aggressive strokes for two boundaries and a six off Haris Rauf to bring down the target to 13.

Misbah struck a boundary off Shaheen's first ball in the penultimate over as the equation came down to six off the last over. Misbah took a single off the first ball after Sohail Akhtar dropped him at deep fine-leg before Ryan ten Doeschate bowled Sammy to give Lahore some hopes.

But a quick single off the second last ball made sure that Peshawar Zalmi got over the line and seal a spot for the play-offs.

Misbah, declared man of the match, said his aim was to play till the last over.

Lahore continued to lose wickets at crucial intervals of the match. Their captain Fakhar Zaman and fellow opener Anron Devcich fell within the space of six runs.

Tymal Mills opened the gates with the wicket of Devcich while Sameen Gul dismissed Fakhar and Sohail Akhtar for 11.

Haris and Masood added 32 for the fifth wicket before Mills accounted for both to quash Lahore’s hopes of putting up a big score.
