Usman Shinwari defended five runs off the last over to send Karachi Kings into the playoffs in the 28th match of the Pakistan Super League 2019 against Quetta Gladiators in Karachi.
After conceding a single on the first ball of the last over, Shinwari removed Ahmed Shehzad (99) - caught at mid-on by Colin Ingram diving to his right, before removing Anwar Ali (2) - caught behind - on the next ball. Mohammad Nawaz took a single on the next before skipper Sarfraz Ahmed chopped on the next delivery to leave Quetta with three runs to get off the last ball. With Sohail Tanvir on strike, Shinwari bowled a low full toss which Tanvir failed to connect and Quetta could only scramble for a single - handing Karachi a one-run victory.
Quetta's chase of Karachi's 190-5 was powered by in-form Ahmed Shehzad, who kept Quetta on course - until the last over. Shehzad scored his third consecutive fifty of the season, on course to 99, before falling just a run short to a well-deserved hundred. The other contributors for Quetta were Shane Watson (20 off 15) and Umar Akmal (27 off 20).
Teenage spinner Umer Khan's fairytale continued as Shane Watson, Rilee Rossouw and Umar Akmal became his latest victims. He finished with the figures of three for 26.
Earlier, a Babar Azam fifty and a blazing 18-ball 44* from Iftikhar Ahmed had powered Karachi to 190 for five after they were asked to bat first.
Babar added 69 for the first-wicket partnership with Colin Munro (30). Colin Ingram scored 24 off 10 balls while Ben Dunk smashed 18 off 11 while Iftikhar Ahmed blazed away with an unbeaten 44 off 18 balls.
Teenage pacer Mohammad Hasnain finished with the figures of two for 36.
Usman Shinwari was adjudged man of the match for his stunning last over.
