Warner's heroics go in vain as Russell's onslaught overcomes Sunrisers Hyderabad

David Warner’s 85 from 53 balls on his IPL comeback went in vain as Sunrisers Hyderabad lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.

His efforts were not enough, with Andre Russell hitting an unbeaten 49 off 19 balls as the Knight Riders won by six wickets with two balls remaining.

Russell and Gill put together an unbeaten 65-run stand, who hit 18 runs including the match winning six.

Earlier, Warner stood out in a 118-run opening stand with Jonny Bairstow, who made 39, to set a platform for a huge total.

The Australian admitted some anxiety before his big return to IPL.

"I was a bit nervous in the dressing room and kept drinking pickle juice," he said.

Bairstow was bowled by leg-spinner Piyush Chawla but Warner took the attack to the opposition, hitting nine fours and three sixes during his blitz.

Vijay Shankar then struck 40 off 24 balls to take the Sunrisers Hyderabad to 181 by the end of 20 overs.

In reply, KKR lost Chris Lynn early, when the hard-hitting batsman top-edged one from Shakib, caught at covers by Rashid Khan.

But Nitish Rana (68 off 47) and Robin Uthappa (35 off 27) put on a solid stand to get their side back in the contest.

There was a brief stoppage in play due to faulty floodlights and Nitish Rana fell to Rashid Khan soon after. That was cue for Russell to start an onslaught and the first man in his radar was Siddharth Kaul.

Russell smashed Kaul for two successive sixes and a four in the 18th over before hitting Bhuvneshwar Kumar for two fours and as many maximums in the 19th over to get KKR in sight of victory.

Russell took a single off Shakib the 20th over but Gill showed his skills to finish things off easily for his side.
