Imran Tahir took four for 27 to restrict Kolkata Knight Riders to 161-8 before Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja took Chennai Super Kings over the line to deliver the seventh victory for their side in the 29th match of the IPL 2019.
Put into bat first at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata's total of 161 was mainly powered by Chris Lynn who smacked 82 off 51 balls. Lynn and Sunil Narine had returned to the side after missing Kolkata's clash against Delhi Capitals on Friday. But Narine failed to make much impact with the bat as he could only manage 2 off 7 balls. Nitish Rana (21 off 18) and Dinesh Karthik (18 off 14) got starts but failed to kick on.
When Lynn fell for 82 on the first ball of the 15th over, KKR's score was 122 for four. The lower order couldn't capitalise on the start and could only manage 39 off the remaining 35 deliveries.
The chief tormentor of Kolkata was Tahir who removed Rana, Robin Uthappa (golden duck), Lynn and destructive Andre Russell (10 off 4).
Shardul Thakur finished with 2-18 while Mitchell Santner took one wicket.
In reply, Chennai openers Shane Watson and Faf du Plessis fell after scoring 6 and 24 respectively. Raina, who came in one down, continued to hold one end as wicket fell at regular intervals at the other end. When MS Dhoni (16 off 13) fell in the 16th over, Jadeja joined Raina in the middle. The duo smashed 41 off 24 balls to take their side home with two balls to spare and five wickets in hand.
Sunil Narine finished with the figures of 2-19 while Piyush Chawla took 2-37.
