Lasith Malinga took 4-31 to help Mumbai Indians restrict Royal Challengers Bangalore to 171-7 before a late onslaught from Hardik Pandya (37* off 16) handed Virat Kohli's team seventh defeat of the season by five wickets at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium in the 31st match of the IPL 2019.
Chasing a total of 172, contributions from Quinton de Kock (40 off 26), Rohit Sharma (28 off 19), Suryakumar Yadav (29 off 23) and Ishan Kishan (21 of 9) had set up the platform nicely for the late hitters. Hardik walked in with Mumbai needing 43 off 27 balls and smashed five boundaries and a six to seal the game with an over to spare.
Moeen Ali and Yuzvendra Chahal shared two wickets each for the RCB.
Earlier, Bangalore rode on AB de Villiers (75 off 51) and Moeen Ali (50 off 32) fifties to post 171 for seven after they were asked to bat first. De Villiers added 37 and 95 run partnerships with Parthiv Patel (28 off 20) and Ali respectively to lay a strong foundation after Kohli was out early after scoring just eight.
Malinga, who was adjudged the player of the match, was the chief tormentor in the later stages of the innings, finishing with four scalps while Jason Behrendorff and Hardik Pandya shared a wicket each.
