Kings XI Punjab defeated Rajasthan Royals by 12 runs to climb up to the fourth spot in IPL 2019 standings in the 32nd game of the season.
Chasing a target of 183, Rajasthan fell apart in the latter half of the innings after Jos Buttler (23 off 17), Rahul Tripathi (50 off 45), Sanju Samson (27 off 21) and skipper Ajinkya Rahane (26 off 21) laid a strong foundation for the late hitters. Tripathi added 38, 59 and 30 runs with Buttler, Samson and Rahane before he fell on the last ball of the 16th over off Ravichandran Ashwin (2-24). With 56 needed off last four, only Stuart Binny (33 off 11) put up a resistance as Ashton Turner (0) and Jofra Archer (1) failed. Rajasthan managed 170-7 in the 20 overs.
Arshdeep Singh, Mohammad Shami and Ravi Ashwin shared two wickets each for Punjab.
Earlier, after being asked to bat first, Punjab were powered to 182 courtesy contributions from the top order. KL Rahul continued his brilliant form with the bat and struck another half-century (52 off 47) while Chris Gayle (30 off 22), Mayank Agarwal (26 off 12) and David Miller (40 off 27 provided the impetus). Skipper Ashwin smacked two sixes and a boundary in his 4-ball 17 and was also adjudged the player of the match.
Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers for Rajasthan with the figures of 3-15.
