Sri Lanka have appointed Dimuth Karunaratne as ODI captain to lead the side in their campaign in the ODI World Cup in England and Wales starting May 30.
Karunaratne has not played an ODI since the 2015 edition of the 50-over tournament. He has played 17 ODIs in total and averages 15.83 with a high score of 60.
His overall List A numbers are relatively better with an average 34.34 in 120 games, including six centuries.
The left-hander recently led Sri Lanka to a historic Test series sweep in South Africa and was also named in the ICC Test Team of the Year 2018.
Sri Lanka's last four ODI series have seen three different captains, with all of Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Lasith Malinga leading the side.
Karunaratne was recently involved in a drink-driving incident for which he was fined and reprimanded by Sri Lanka cricket.
Sri Lanka are yet to announce their World Cup preliminary squad.
