Sri Lanka drop Chandimal, bring back Thirimanne for World Cup

Sri Lanka on Thursday dropped former captain Dinesh Chandimal in their 15-man squad for the upcoming World Cup in England and Wales.

The selectors added Lahiru Thirimanne and leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay in the World Cup squad.

Chandimal alongside Niroshan Dickwella, off-spinner Akila Dananjaya, openers Danushka Gunathilaka and Upul Tharanga were all left out of the 15-man squad.

Thirimanne and Vandersay along with all-rounders Milinda Siriwardana and Jeevan Mendis got picked despite not playing in the ODI side for more than a year.

Dimuth Karunaratne, who was appointed as Sri Lanka’s captain on Wednesday, last played an ODI in March 2015.

The 1996 champions kick start their campaign against New Zealand in Cardiff on June 1.
