Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan powered Delhi Capitals to five-wicket win over Kings XI Punjab. As an effect of the result, the two teams swapped places in the standings; the Delhi Capitals climbed to third, while KXIP slipped to fourth.
After opting to bowl first, the Delhi Capitals recovered from Chris Gayle’s onslaught to restrict the visitors to 163-7.
Later, Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer scored half-centuries, and their 92-run partnership laid a strong foundation for the run-chase.
Despite being in control of the chase, the hosts got themselves in trouble when Dhawan, Pant and Ingram all perished to attacking strokes. Axar Patel’s run out in the nineteenth over only added to the drama.
The equation was finally reduced to the Delhi Capitals needing six runs off the final over which was completed with two balls to spare.
Earlier, KXIP rode on Chris Gayle’s 69 and a couple of other useful contributions to get to 163-7.
Gayle, who motored along at the other end, found good company in the form of Mandeep Singh; the fourth wicket pair added 45 runs to provide stability to the innings.
Debutant Harpreet Brar provided KXIP the flourish at the end after Mandeep’s dismissal. The left-hander hit two boundaries and a six in his unbeaten 12-ball 20.
Skipper Shreyas Iyer was declared player of the match for his 58 off 49 balls.
