Rahane ton in vain as Pant blitz powers Delhi home

Rishabh Pant hit a match-winning 78 to lead Delhi Capitals to the top of the IPL 2019 standings with a six-wicket over Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

The 21-year-old, who was not picked in the preliminary 15-man Indian squad for the World Cup, said the exclusion from the squad for the World Cup was on his mind during the knock.

He smashed six boundaries and four maximums during his 36-ball blitz as Delhi achieved their target of 192 with four balls to spare.

"Feels really good to make your team win a crucial match," Pant said after the man of the match performance.

"I won't lie that the thought wasn't running through my mind, but I just focus on my process and that's what I was doing," added Pant.

Pant built crucial partnerships, including an 84-run third-wicket stand with Prithvi Shaw (42).

Shikhar Dhawan laid the platform for Delhi with his 27-ball 54.

Shreyas Gopal took two wickets while Dhawal Kulkarni and Riyan Parag shared a wicket each.

Earlier Ajinkya Rahane struck an unbeaten 105 off 63 balls days after being replaced as Rajasthan captain by Steve Smith to guide his team to 191-6 after they were asked to bat first.

Smith (50 off 32) struck his second successive since taking over the captaincy. Rahane and Smith put on 130 runs for the second wicket after Sanju Samson (0) fell early.

Kagiso Rabada finished with 2-37.

"We probably didn't finish off with the bat as well as we could have. I thought (Chris) Morris and (Kagiso) Rabada executed well in the backend," said Smith.

"(For Delhi) Shikhar played a magnificent knock, and Rishabh is a powerful young man, and he plays the ball in strange spots."
