Jason Roy earns maiden call-up for Ireland Test

Jason Roy on Wednesday earned his maiden Test call-up to face Ireland following his blistering run in white-ball cricket.

Roy played a key role in England’s first World Cup win following his return from a torn hamstring which forced him to sit out in three matches.

His return at the top of the order alongside Jonny Bairstow provided much-needed firepower to England.

Wood and Archer were left out of the squad as the pace duo is currently recovering from side strain.

Wood’s niggle is likely to keep him out of the action for four to six weeks which leaves him certain to miss the start of the Ashes series.

Roy's aggressive approach at the top of the order tempted the selectors to give him a shot in the longer version of the game.

England’s Test squad also includes Somerset bowling all-rounder Lewis Gregory, who earned maiden call-up after putting up an impressive show for Somerset and England Lions.

Warwickshire speed merchant Olly Stone, who made his debut for England in the ODIs against Sri Lanka last year, earns his second call up to the Test squad.

Stone’s back problem kept him out of the action for a long period but now he has fully recovered.

Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes were rested ahead of a long Ashes series starting at Edgbaston from August 1.

Archer, who made a thumping start to his international career in limited overs cricket, is likely to be picked for the Ashes this summer.

He was rewarded with an increment contract by the ECB for the next 12 months following his impressive run in the World Cup.
