5 moments that won our hearts in the World Cup

Brathwaite surrounded by the empathizing NZ players

Brathwaite played a truly exceptional innings taking the game right down to the wire by scoring an unbelievable 101. The game came down to either Brathwaite or Oshane Thomas requiring 6 runs to win the game, and with one last mighty heave, the sturdy batsman sent the ball to long-on, where Trent Boult was waiting to pouch a stunning catch. What a game and what an innings from Brathwaite that was and he must have felt so hard done by it but that is cricket. New Zealand players came rushing in trying to comfort the big lad who was down on his knees in despair. Ross Taylor, Jimmy Neesham, and Kane Williamson congratulated him on his marathon innings and demonstrated empathy which is such an important facet of this gentleman's game.

Kohli urged Indian stringent of fans not to jeer Smith

In the aftermath of the Sandpapergate scandal back in 2018, Steve Smith was fast-tracked into the Australian team for the World Cup 2019 and the move paid rich dividends in the tournament. In the clash of heavyweights during the round-robin, the Indian crowd started booing Smith when he was fielding in the deep but in a surprise turn of events, Virat Kohli took control of the situation and gestured the crowd to stop ridiculing him and later in the post-match conference, apologized to Smith on the behalf of Indian fans.

"What has happened is in the past, I felt bad for him," Kohli said. He received a truckload of praise from fans and the entire cricket fraternity on his display of sportsmanship. He is idolized by millions around the world and by showing character on that moment, he made himself an inspirational figure for the aspiring youth in particular.

Williamson checking up on Rashid

The true gentleman of the game, Kane Williamson stepped in and displayed a true act of sportsmanship making sure his Afghanistan counterpart was fine when he was treated with hostile short pitch stuff. Rashid Khan, jolted by the severe blow on his helmet, was taken out of the remainder of the game as a precautionary measure. He didn't pass the concussion test but what stood out in the middle was Williamson's display of concern as he put his shoulder around Rashid and was visibly worried for the leggie's safety.

Heartbroken Guptill consoled by Woakes

In a bizarre and intense emotional roller-coaster ride in the final match, Martin Guptill faced a fuller delivery on the pads during the Super Over, he clipped it into the leg-side and had to hustle back for the double to win the epic clash but he fell short and was left stranded in the middle. It was one of the saddest sights of the game but Chris Woakes before erupting in euphoria was mindful of the turmoil that Guptill was going through and he went straight to him, consoling the devasted opener who was engulfed in grief. That brilliant act of humanity reminded us all that compassion can help heal wounds.

Amir and Kohli shared a light moment

The two players have fantastic camaraderie that was conspicuous when Virat Kohli gifted a bat to Mohammad Amir in the T20 Asia Cup 2016. It's always a compelling spectacle watching them showing their dexterity at the apex level. They exchanged pleasantries in the recent World Cup 2019 and were all smiles during the entire match. It reinforced the fact that Indian and Pakistani players usually get along nicely and it reminded us all about our shared history, culture, and friendship. Sports is after all supposed to bridge the gaps and bring people closer.
