PCB's new constitution gets cabinet approval

The federal cabinet has approved the new Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) constitution with notable changes in the domestic cricket structure.

According to the new constitution, the CEO will take the center stage and will make all important decisions including but not limited to the recruitment of selection committee personnel, national team captain, and managerial issues.

Wasim Khan is set to become the CEO after the removal of managing director position from the system of rules. A new eleven-member board will have representatives from cricket associations, independent directors, federal secretary, and the CEO.

Moreover, the number of cricket associations has been significantly brought down from sixteen to three in an attempt to promote competitiveness.

City regional associations and departments will be replaced with only six regional teams from the provinces in the domestic circuit — two teams from Punjab and the other provinces will field one team apiece.

These six associations will oversee cricketing matters at Under 13, Under 16, Under 19, club and school cricket levels in their respective province.

Associations will continue to play a pivotal role in grooming young players and preparing them for the selection of provincial teams. This year, six provincial teams will be in action during the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy instead of departmental sides.

The patron in chief, Imran Khan, was adamant even before he assumed the office of Prime Minister to create a system comprising only regional teams.

Earlier this year, there was a lot of fuss when these changes first surfaced as many Board of Governors vehemently rejected the proposition along with some former players who feared a lack of financial support for budding cricketers. However, PM Imran Khan took a firm stance and directed Ehsan Mani to go forward with overhauling the system.

The departmental teams (private sector and government institutions managed sides) will no longer participate in domestic competitions but could sponsor domestic teams.

Meanwhile, the PCB will take the major responsibility of financing teams with the help of one main sponsor that will be picked for a five-year term.
