Hafeez replaces De Villiers at Middlesex

Middlesex have acquired the services of Mohammad Hafeez for a short-term deal beginning with the T20 Blast clash between the Lord's-based county and Essex on August 14.

Hafeez will be replacing AB de Villiers, who opted to take a break midway through the tournament but will return for the club's last two games in the group phase.

The Proteas batting veteran will join Hafeez as Middlesex's other overseas signing for the matches against Hampshire and Somerset two weeks later in the absence of Afghanistan's Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

A long-serving all-rounder for Pakistan, Hafeez did not have an impressive World Cup where his side failed to qualify for the semi-finals.

The 38-year-old could muster only 253 runs at an average of 31.62 and picked up two wickets in the entire showpiece event.

Subsequently, Hafeez's name was excluded from the list of central contracts announced by the Pakistan Cricket Board recently despite his insistence to continue playing white-ball cricket at the international level.

He bowed out of Test cricket last year ending his career with 3652 runs across 55 games.

Hafeez will be debuting in the T20 Blast following a stint with Edmonton Royals in the second edition of the Global T20 Canada.

"We are delighted to have a player of Mohammad’s experience and ability to join us for the last few matches of the T20 group campaign," Middlesex Cricket's Managing Director of Cricket told the club's website.
