Usman Khawaja is leading Australia in the tour match against Derbyshire currently underway as regular skipper Tim Paine has been rested by the management.
Khawaja, who has captained Queensland Bulls in the Sheffield Shield since 2015, has struggled for form in the ongoing Ashes series managing to compile just 122 runs in six innings at an average of 20.33.
Meanwhile, a fit Steve Smith returning from a concussion injury is taking part in the match while David Warner, Travis Head, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, James Pattinson and Nathan Lyon have been left out of the clash at Derby.
Despite being handed the captaincy baton, Khawaja's place in the playing XI for the fourth Test at Old Trafford is clouded in uncertainty with him fighting it out for the opening batsman slot with Marcus Harris.
Smith currently reigns at the top of the run charts this series and is likely to walk into the team for the next Test at the expense of either Khawaja or Harris.
Australia have called up Alex Carey to take the wicketkeeping role in the warm-up game although Cameron Bancroft and Matthew Wade are part of the squad.
Australia's World Cup star performer Carey is not in the Ashes line-up and is expected to head back to his county side Sussex by the end of the match.
