Ten Sri Lankan players including Lasith Malinga, Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera have opted out of the upcoming Pakistan tour, Sri Lanka Cricket board said in a statement.
The SLC said in a statement that players in preliminary squad were given a briefing on the security arrangements for the limited overs fixtures.
However, the players were given a free hand in deciding whether they wanted to travel or not.
The other seven who chose to stay away were Niroshan Dickwella, Kusal Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Akila Dananjaya, Suranga Lakmal, Dinesh Chandimal and Dimuth Karunaratne.
Sri Lanka are scheduled to play three ODIs in Karachi, starting September 27 before returning to Lahore for as many T20Is.
The pulling out of major players comes as a blow for Pakistan as it would hinder SLC from sending a second string Test squad for the series scheduled in December as the World Test Championship points are at stake.
The upcoming limited overs series isn’t Sri Lanka’s first tour since the infamous terrorist attacks took place in 2009. They returned to Pakistan for a lone T20I in Lahore in October 2017 when Thisara Perera led the squad.
However, Perera has opted not to tour Pakistan this time.
SLC are yet to announce the squads for Pakistan series.
