St Kitts and Nevis Patriots complete record chase despite Gayle's ton

St Kitts and Nevis Patriots withstood Chris Gayle's batting assault to record the highest run-chase in Caribbean Premier League (CPL) history.

St Kitts rode on quick-fire fifties from Evin Lewis and Devon Thomas before a blazing contribution from Fabian Allen saw them chase down 242 with seven balls to spare against Jamaica Tallawahs.

A record total of 37 sixes were hit in the exuberant run-fest with ten of them coming from the bat of Gayle.

Tallawahs, having set the highest team total in CPL, were stunned in the second innings as Patriots surmounted the steep target.

St Kitts opted to field first but soon ran into a Gayle storm despite the early scalp of opener Glenn Phillips.

The self-proclaimed 'Universe Boss' bludgeoned the opposition bowling attack with monstrous blows that traveled the distance into the night sky.

Gayle, having gone 59 innings without a T20 century, reached the three-figure mark in 53 balls as he added 162 runs for the second wicket with Chadwick Walton.

He managed a dazzling 62-ball 116, which muscled Tallawahs to 241-4 with Walton smashing 73 off 36 deliveries while Andre Russell hit a couple of sixes.

Gayle's pyrotechnics with the bat were overshadowed by a rollicking start to the St Kitts chase spearheaded by the fastest CPL fifty from Lewis.

Lewis scored 53 from 18 deliveries as the opening partnership posted 85 runs in a mere 5.3 overs.

The momentum was carried on by Thomas, who reached his half-century in 30 balls, while Laurie Evans led the attack from the other end with 41 off 20.

A flurry of wickets towards the end threatened to dent Patriots' progress but Allen's unbeaten 37 off 15 deliveries ensured his side their first victory of the season.

Tallawahs are placed second last in the points table with no wins from two games.
