Rahkeem Cornwall blasts Zouks to victory over Tallawahs

Rahkeem Cornwall smashed a 30-ball 75 to help St Lucia Zouks register their first win of the 2019 Caribbean Premier League.

The all-rounder, promoted to open the innings, launched a frenzied attack to lead his side to a comfortable five-wicket win over Jamaica Tallawahs.

Cornwall shared a rapid 111-run partnership with opening partner Andre Fletcher before being dismissed by Shamar Springer in the ninth over of Zouks' chase.

The 26-year-old took full advantage of the fielding restrictions in the first six overs by clearing the boundary fence a number of times.

Cornwall did not merely rely on wild slogs as he often caressed the ball through the narrow gaps to pile misery on the Jamaica bowlers.

He reached his fifty in just 19 balls and continued to strike sixes even with the field being spread.

Cornwall's 30-ball stay at the crease featured a total of eight maximums as his rampage began when he backed away to clatter Jerome Taylor for back-to-back sixes.

The effect of a middle-order collapse was subdued by Fletcher, who eventually guided Zouks to the target of 171 with 20 balls to spare.

Earlier, Tallawahs skipper Chris Gayle perished for a golden duck before Glenn Phillips stabilized the innings with an 87-run stand with Rovman Powell.

The home side was lifted by Powell's 22-ball 44 but suffered a halt in the momentum when Andre Russell was struck on the helmet by a Hardus Viljoen bouncer.

Russell, visibly shaken by the force of the blow, was stretchered off the field although scans later revealed he had avoided a serious injury.

Jamaica then stuttered towards the fag end of the innings, reaching 170-5 in their 20 overs - a total that proved to be insufficient in the face of Cornwall's blistering hits.
