Malik blitz spurs Guyana to fifth win on the trot

Shoaib Malik was the star of Guyana Amazon Warriors' fifth successive win in the Caribbean Premier League as they registered an emphatic 81-run victory over Jamaica Tallawahs.

The Guyana skipper laid the foundation for a commanding total before employing shrewd tactics during Jamaica's chase to scythe through their explosive top-order.

The 37-year-old enjoyed great success with the bat as he set the tone with a brisk unbeaten 67 seeing Guyana post 218-6 in their allotted 20 overs.

Malik's 37-ball stay at the crease featured six boundaries and three maximums as he often took the aerial route against off-spinner Ramaal Lewis.

Guyana's batting assault was earlier launched by Shimron Hetmyer and Brandon King after opening batsman Chandrapaul Hemraj was dismissed for a golden duck.

Hetmyer departed for a fluent 25-ball 44 while King struck six towering sixes in his substantial contribution of 59 runs.

The presence of Chris Gayle and Glenn Phillips in the Tallawahs' line-up was nullified by the smart use of spinners upfront by Malik.

Imran Tahir, Chris Green and Qais Ahmad shared five wickets between them as they dried up the runs leaving the Tallawahs' batsmen no option but to attempt unsuccessful wild slogs.

Later, Andre Russell briefly offered some resistance but the climbing asking rate meant he had to continue playing expansive strokes loaded with risk.

Russell's 19-ball 40 came to an end after Malik held onto a sharp catch off the bowling of Odean Smith.

Keemo Paul then returned to finish off the tail to deliver Guyana another dominating triumph, bolstering their top position on the points table.
