Iftikhar, Nawaz recalled as Pakistan announce 16-member squad for Sri Lanka ODIs

Iftikhar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz, Abid Ali have been recalled to Pakistan’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against Sri Lanka.

Wicketkeeper batsman Mohammad Rizwan and fast bowler Usman Shinwari have also earned call ups.

Hasan Ali is absent from the squad after complaints of back spasm whereas Shaheen Shah Afridi also missed out after being diagnosed with a dengue fever last month.

Misbah, while addressing a press conference at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, said Iftikhar Ahmed provided much needed depth in the squad both with the bat and ball.

“Iftikhar Ahmed is a batsman who can also bowl off-spin and provides the captain with necessary bowling depth as Sri Lanka boasts a few left-handers in their ranks, said Pakistan head coach and chief selector.

“Mohammad Nawaz has been performing well in domestic matches. Despite their strong performances, Mohammad Rizwan, Usman Shinwari and Abid Ali were unlucky to miss out the World Cup squad.”

Mohammad Hafeez, who is currently representing St Kitts and Nevis Patriots in the Caribbean Premier League, has been left out of the ODI squad.

But Misbah said the senior duo of Malik and Hafeez were a part of plans for the next year’s T20 World Cup in Australia.

“Shoaib and Hafeez have performed well in the last 10 T20s and we can't ignore them, but this is the opportunity for other players to show their skills."

The squad for the three T20Is against Sri Lanka will be announced during the ODI series.

The ODI series between Pakistan and Sri Lanka will start from September 27 at Karachi.
