Travis Head has signed up with Sussex for 2020 season, the county confirmed in a statement on Wednesday. The left-hander will be available for all three formats.
He was due to turn up for the 2019 season but missed out following international duties in the Ashes. As a result, Sussex then recruited Alex Carey.
Sussex head coach, Jason Gillespie, is instrumental in signing Head following his decent relationship with the left-hander at Adelaide Strikers.
"I've known Trav for a number of years. We have a really good relationship and after we decided here at Sussex that an overseas batsman would complement our squad next year I just knew that Travis would be ideal,” said Gillespie.
Gillespie said he wanted to strengthen up the Sussex top-order and Head is an excellent choice for it.
“With such a proud history, success is expected, and I want to play my part in achieving that. I look forward to seeing you all next summer." ??@TravisHead34 says he is "thrilled" to be joining the club:— Sussex Cricket (@SussexCCC) September 25, 2019
"We wanted a top four batsman to improve our team and Travis will do that.”
Travis Head led his domestic side South Australia to Sheffield Shield finals in 2015-16 and 2016-17 but his side couldn’t win the title. However, Adelaide Strikers won their maiden Big Bash title in 2017-18 under his captaincy.
“He's shown his class in his international career so far, he brings some useful off-spin and he will offer good leadership support to our captains from his time leading South Australia and the Strikers,” Gillespie added.
"I was disappointed not to have been able to take up my contract this summer so was thrilled that Jason and Keith [Greenfield, the club director of cricket] were keen to lock me away for the 2020 season," said Head on his signing.
