Cornwall carnage knocks Jamaica Tallawahs out of contention for playoffs

Rahkeem Cornwall's blazing batting heroics paved the way for St Lucia Zouks to achieve their third win of the season while Jamaica Tallawahs fail to qualify for the playoff stages for the first time in seven CPL editions.

Tallawahs desperately required a win heading into this game to stay alive in the tournament but they ran into a blistering fifty from Cornwall as the tourists suffered a four-wicket defeat with five balls to spare.

Earlier, Jamaica were propelled by a fine cameo from Glenn Phillips at the start of the innings.

His opening partnership with Chris Gayle lasted 4.4 overs, during which the duo accumulated 48 runs before Phillips was dismissed by Hardus Viljoen.

Later, when Gayle departed for an uncharacteristically sedate 30-ball 29, Dwayne Smith steadied the Tallawahs innings and scored 58 featuring six boundaries and three sixes.

Kesrick Williams, who was eventually adjudged player of the match, was the pick of the bowlers for the home side with 3-24 in four overs as they managed to restrict the opposition to 165-7.

In reply, Cornwall and Andre Fletcher went on a rampage to bring up the team fifty in no time.

The 26-year-old took a special liking to Jerome Taylor's bowling, dispatching the veteran paceman for two sixes during an over that cost Tallawahs 25 runs.

Boundaries continued to flow from Cornwall's bat as his enterprising 25-ball 51 was adorned by four fours and five maximums.

Zouks still needed 87 runs for victory when the all-rounder got out to Ramaal Lewis but a patient contribution from Viljoean eased the pressure.

Skipper Darren Sammy and Krishmar Santokie had to do little towards the end to complete Zouks' successful chase.
