Jersey trample controversy-laden UAE by 35 runs

United Arab Emirates' mercurial tournament campaign met another obstacle as they crashed to a 35-run loss in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Qualifier clash against minnows Jersey.

UAE were outdone by spin duo Harrison Carlyon and Ben Stevens, who sparked a spectacular collapse causing the hosts to scramble to 112 all out after being 60-0 in the ninth over.

Veteran batsman Rohan Mustafa stitched a solid opening stand with Chirag Suri but the dismissal of the latter via a miscued drive triggered a procession of wickets.

Mustafa soon departed with the middle order failing to meet the climbing asking rate and mistimed slogs often ended up in the hands of the fielders.

Darius D'Silva and Ahmed Raza were the only other batsmen apart from the openers who reached double figures but their paltry contributions did little to help UAE's cause.

Earlier in the day, Ben Ward played a sublime innings to rescue Jersey from a precarious position at 67-4.

The southpaw upped the ante with blistering strokes, smoking four sixes during his 24-ball 47.

Ward's timely heroics with the bat ensured Jersey had enough on the board to pose a plausible challenge to the opposition.

The controversy-hit UAE team had triumphed in their previous two games after a horrid start to the competition, which saw them lose to Oman.

Already struggling with the baggage of four players provisionally suspended on corruption charges, UAE's prospects of succeeding in the tournament look bleak.
