PNG beat Namibia to set up final clash with Netherlands

Papua New Guinea's dream run in the T20 World Cup Qualifier saw them clinch another win to progress to the final of the tournament to take on the resurgent Netherlands on Saturday.

Days after finishing at the top of their group and securing automatic qualification to the T20 World Cup in Australia next year, PNG defeated Namibia by 18 runs in Dubai.

While spin has been PNG's weapon of choice throughout the competition, Norman Vanua's thorny medium-pace caused all sorts of problems to the Namibia batters.

The African nation, one of the six teams to qualify for the grand stage in 2020, actually did well to restrict Assad Vala's men to 130-5 in their 20 overs.

PNG were disturbed by early strikes leaving them 31-3 inside the Powerplay before Charles Amini and Sese Bau steadied the innings with a 50-run stand.

However, boundaries began to dry up towards the end of the innings and PNG failed to get many in the death overs.

Namibia employed a total of seven bowling options on a slow surface where connecting the strokes cleanly proved to be a challenge for the batters.

PNG went one step further and used eight bowlers after Damien Ravu injured himself while completing a catch off his own bowling.

Namibia got off to the worst possible start with the loss of opener Nikolaas Davin in the second over of the chase.

The lack of substantial contributions from subsequent batsmen amidst the mounting asking rate induced miscued slogs.

Vanua picked up two key wickets during the middle overs including the prized scalp of 'super skipper' Gerhard Erasmus, who was not able to conjure any miracles with the bat this time around.

By the time Erasmus was dismissed, the required run rate had already crept up to 13 runs an over and PNG smoothly strolled to a well-deserved victory.
