India will be looking to strengthen their top position in the World Test championship when they face Bangladesh in a two-match Test series.
India will clearly start as favourites for the series given their terrific run of form whereas Bangladesh have some tough questions to answer.
The hosts have swept their series against West Indies and South Africa since the start of the Test championship in August. They will head into the series lifted by the 2-1 series win over Bangladesh in T20Is.
Rohit Sharma has been in scintillating form, smashing two hundreds and a double hundred after being promoted to open the batting in the South Africa series.
The pace department, termed ‘best in the world’ by skipper Kohli, looks in imperious form despite Jasprit Bumrah missing out due to an injury.
The trio of Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami and Ishant Sharma was a vital cog in India’s 3-0 lead over South Africa with 24 wickets among them.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh, under new Test captain Mominul Haque, didn’t have a great build-up to this series as Shakib Al Hasan was banned by the ICC after failing to declare illegal approaches by a bookmaker.
Bangladesh’s tour of India was under jeopardy before the BCB decided to increase match fees for players in domestic cricket.
The touring side is also missing prolific opener Tamim Iqbal who decided to stay away citing family reasons.
"We are missing three players in two players. Shakib bhai (brother) is two players in one, and then you have Tamim bhai," Mominul said ahead of the first Test.
"It is challenging, but I also see it as a chance to do well for the rest of the players."
Liton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad will take over the team's batting alongside Mominul who is not a part of T20Is.
"I never considered captaincy as pressure or responsibility. If I keep thinking that as a captain I have to take extra responsibility to carry the team forward then I will be in some pressure," Mominul said after being named captain.
"But if I play my natural game, and think that I am a batsman who needs to score for his team, then it will not have any effect."
