Former New Zealand off-spinner Jeetan Patel has been named as England’s spin bowling consultant for upcoming tours of South Africa and Sri Lanka.
Patel was a part of the England’s coaching staff in the T20I series which was won by the touring side 3-2. He has now announced his retirement from Cricket Wellington and will be playing his final game on December 18 in New Zealand’s Super Smash T20 competition.
The 39-year-old will join the England squad on December 24 ahead of the Boxing Day Test in Centurion.
He will then assist England’s spin bowlers during their tour of Sri Lanka in March next year as part of the World Test championship.
Apart from his 78 international appearances, Patel gained significant experience during his county stint with Warwickshire, where he claimed 473 first-class wickets and got to know Ashley Giles, who is a current director of England’s men team.
