Hampshire have signed Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi for the upcoming season of the Vitality T20 Blast. He joins the club as an overseas player.
Shaheen, who has become an integral part of Pakistan’s fast bowling unit across all three formats, is likely to be available for the duration of the T20 competition.
The 19-year-old had considerable success on English soil in the World Cup earlier this year, recording stunning figures of 6 for 35 against Bangladesh at Lord’s.
“I am delighted to sign with Hampshire for the upcoming Vitality Blast competition,” said Shaheen on his signing as quoted by Hampshire CCC.
“I have always enjoyed playing in England in front of the fantastic fans and I look forward to joining this historic club for my first experience of county cricket.”
In his 29 white ball matches for Pakistan, he has taken 54 wickets at an average of 21.02, which according to Director of Cricket, Giles White, will add extra dimension to the Hampshire attack.
“A lot of the best sides in T20 cricket possess a very good bowling attack and Shaheen adds an extra dimension to the group we have, offering excellent accuracy, pace and lots of variations,” said White.
“He’s an emerging young talent in world cricket so we’re delighted to have him on board for next summer’s Vitality Blast.”
