Melbourne Stars have picked Haris Rauf, rather unexpectedly, as the overseas replacement for Dale Steyn in their Big Bash League opener against Brisbane Heat.
Rauf, who shot to prominence for his performances in this year's Pakistan Super League, is currently in Australia as part of the Lahore Qalandars Player Development Program.
The young exciting quick is yet to make his international debut and has registered only 18 appearances in the shortest format grabbing 19 wickets at an average of 24.21.
Steyn sustained a side strain injury during the Mzansi Super League, forcing him to delay his BBL debut.
He is expected to be fit in time for the Stars' clash against Hobart Hurricanes on Sunday.
“Our priority is Dale’s fitness and continuing his treatment. He is very keen to play but we’ll let him rest after a long flight to Australia and put him in the best position to be ready for our match in Moe on Sunday,” Tommy Simsek, Melbourne Stars physiotherapist, said.
Rauf joins Nathan Coulter-Nile, Hilton Cartwright and Clint Hinchliffe in the list of the BBL franchise's new signings for this season.
All of these players have been named in the 13-man squad for the Stars' first match in the ninth edition of the tournament.
