D'Arcy Short has returned to Australia's ODI set-up for the upcoming tour of India with paceman Sean Abbott sidelined for three-four weeks owing to a side strain.
Abbott, who sustained the injury during a Big Bash League match, will have to wait his chance to make a comeback to the ODI side after making his debut in the format five years ago.
"It is extremely unfortunate for Sean, who is very much a part of our white-ball squad plans leading into the ICC T20 World Cup and the World Cup," national selector Trevor Hohns said.
With the presence of several frontline pace bowling options in the squad, Australia have gone with the hard-hitting Short, who also offers part-time spin.
The left-handed batsman has been a constant feature of Australia's T20 side and made the last of his four ODI appearances in November 2018 against South Africa.
"D'Arcy offers the squad another spinning all-rounder option along with Ashton Agar, which along with the four world-class fast bowlers and Adam Zampa balances the squad out nicely," Hohns added.
"His proven record and ability to bat anywhere in the order will also be a great asset to the squad."
The three-match series gets underway on January 14 in Mumbai following Sri Lanka's T20I encounters against hosts India.
